TAICHUNG CITY CULTURAL CENTRE

The concept was inspired by Taiwanese folk story “The Legend of Sun Moon Lake”. The folk story follows the path of two villagers journeying through a vast and dark landscape in search of the sun and the moon, coming upon a lake reflecting fractions of light they discover two dragons that had stolen the sun and the moon as their play things. The villagers battle the dragons and regain these vital light sources. The two villagers remained to guard the lake in case the dragons returned the two villagers eventually became the two mountains surrounding the lake.

The folk story and the ideas involved in it exemplify the deep and unique connection between Taiwan’s landscape and its people. The architecture and urban landscape that developed became more about celebrating the city and its people: celebrating a culture embedded within strong traditional history, a people that has deep connection to the local land. The City Cultural Centre is a place where the people of the city come together to learn, discover and experience new stories. It is a multi-Layered environment mixing different programs – library, museum, park and agricultural centre – offering various spaces for exploration and experience. It offers a large and flexible urban plaza that can afford a multitude of everyday events as well as large civic/festive events
