PRIME MINISTER’S LODGE
The concept for the new Lodge in Canberra seeks to create a place that not only functions as a formal residence for the Prime Minister, but a place that is for the people of Australia. The role of the Lodge is reinterpreted in our proposal as a predominantly civic building. The 21st Century Lodge is envisaged to be open and accessible for all to enjoy – a community function, exhibition, performance, meeting and fundamentally gathering place.
The spatial organisation of the building centered around a large open courtyard at its heart. The building then wraps over and around with verandahs and terraces opening off the sides connecting to the wider landscape. This mix of courtyard and verandah typologies allows for the public and private functions of the Lodge to harmoniously exist under one large tent like roof structure. The building form draws inspiration from the distinctive Australian character of homestead or verandah houses nestled within the natural beauty of the Australian landscape.
